Lacerations Q & A
What are lacerations?
A laceration is a skin wound caused by a sharp object, like a knife or a shard of glass. Unlike abrasions, lacerations don’t remove any skin. They’re clean cuts as a result of trauma.
What are the symptoms of lacerations?
Common symptoms of lacerations include:
- Pain that’s mild or severe
- Bruising
- Bleeding
- Swelling
- Warmth and redness
Depending on the severity of the laceration, you might also experience skin discoloration.
What should I do if I experience a laceration?
If you or a loved one experiences a laceration, the team at Cali Quick Urgent Care recommends:
Step 1: Stopping the bleeding
If you cut yourself, apply direct pressure to the wound right away. Keep applying pressure until the bleeding stops.
If the bleeding is severe or you bleed for 10 minutes or more, call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room immediately.
Step 2: Clean and protect the wound
Once the bleeding stops, gently wash the laceration with soap and warm water. Then, apply an antibiotic ointment to reduce the risk of infection and put a clean bandage over it.
Step 3: Call the team at Cali Quick Urgent Care
If your laceration is deep or located over a joint, it’s important to seek treatment at Cali Quick Urgent Care. That same rule applies if your wound occurs due to an animal bite or you suffer a deep puncture wound and haven’t had a tetanus shot in several years.
What does the treatment of lacerations involve?
At Cali Quick Urgent Care, the team has years of experience treating lacerations. At the beginning of the appointment, your provider asks about your injury, including what you were doing and how it occurred. They also ask about your symptoms, including the severity of the pain and bleeding.
If you have a deep laceration and the team is worried about the risk of damage to a muscle, ligament, or tendon, they might order diagnostic imaging like a CT scan or an MRI.
After determining the severity of your injury, your provider develops a custom treatment plan. If you have a minor cut, cleaning and caring for it at home may provide relief. More serious cuts may require stitches or sutures and a follow-up appointment.
